Default items for sale, NOT

Does anybody ever feel like giving something to someone in need. Just out of charity?

I do.

If I have a nice weapon, and I see someone on my team who could use it, and I think that this person is not completely whack: I just give it a way for free, or for that symbolic 1 piece of gold.

But can you trust people who claim to be needy, but just pretend to be?

Why not mark item as "not for sale"?

That way nobody can exploit your charity and make a small fortune from items given to him/her for free.

Agreed. I gave a guild member once a superior rune of expertise and all he did was sell it. Go figure...

Great idea ! except that people would find ways around it.

example : Ashley gave me a max damage chaos axe for free, marked not for sale.

I group up with a buyer of that weapon, leave town together, have him pay me 10 k and drop the axe on the ground.

done.

Or maybe it should be instantly customised to the person that the item was given too ?

Some people wont take free items.

Guess this just lends itself to the fact that you can't trust anyone.

You're right. Somehow there's always some workaround.
Customization could work though.
But still you could "force" the new owner to pay you, before you give him/her the item "for free"

I guess honesty can't be hammered into peoples heads. It has to be learned and lived.
I should withdraw my original posting for there seems to be no true solution to the problem.

Is there an amish-district?

What's to trust if you can get something for free?

When my 2nd character, an elementalist/monk, was in need of a bag(5), I was offered one for 4G.
I gladly took this as charity, not stupidity, though it might've been the later.

In the tradition of the movie "pay it forward" I traded another bag(10) I had payed 600G for (100 bag + 500 rune of holding) for 1G.

Sounds stupid? Might be, but instead of ripping off others with overrated prices, I get a kick out of imagining peoples faces when they can get their hands on a wanted item for free, or at least a riduculously low price.

Some say, that I do it because of some weired feeling of superiority.
Ripping off people probably gives those who do the ripping the same feeling.

The difference is: When I give away something for free, both sides are happy.
If you get ripped off, only one person is happy.

People get suspicious if you try to give them stuff for free. I went to Ascalon and gave away some minor runes I'd found yesterday (all of a sudden the game went nuts and showered me with runes, I think I found 10 or so, although nothing exciting), as they're only worth 25 gold to me but may be worth a lot to a low-level char just starting out... It took me several minutes before I got a reply, I think people were simply suspicious it was some sort of scam.

Thats what I'm saying.

For sh*ts and giggles I played a couple of days ago with the idea that I was gonna help people do missions. I went with a small group and after observing the few who were playing I decided to asked what certain players were using for items to see if what I had was better. I gave them slightly better gear (no it was'nt amazing) and they asked if they wanted it back and I found it kinda funny.

Selling items is useless to me because I just dont want to hang around for hours trying to sell a damn sword and I'd rather give items away to people who REALLY need it rather than anounce a free item that someone will take to sell.

People do seem to get a bit funny when you give them stuff. I gave away a major and a minor mesmer rune yesterday to someone. We spent several minutes chasing each other round districts trying to find each other, but once we'd managed it. I gave him the runes.

He tried to give me a purple staff in return, but as I was trying to clear inventory, we had to argue until I'd haggled him down to my original asking price.

I quite often try and give away stuff, but sometimes the uptake's so low that I end up selling it to the traders anyway. I really would prefer if someone got some use out of it though.

what would be the point of this? is this the way it works in real life? if you give a needy homeless person 10 bucks....can you write "do not purchase booze" on the bill.....

if you're giving items away then obviously you don't want/need them so it really shouldn't matter what the person does with them.

In my experience, the people who need things the most are the ones who do not ask. Twice, I have given away items, once around thirty Minor Runes, and I clearly said I would give one per person. However, the same people kept coming back. Every time, I would reject the trade, but that didn't stop them.

Just the other day, I gave out a bunch of worthless weapon upgrades, I clearly said I would give one per person. Someone literally sat next to me and kept clicking the trade button, and no one else could get to me. People would come back and say "I don't want this, can I have a better one?" One person got mad when I didn't give them extra things because they traded me a salvage item with a Minor Mesmer Rune in it, which I proceded to give away after, along with a max damage sword and some other things. The whole time, a Monk was just sitting near me waiting to see if I had anything extra, so I saved something and gave him some gold.

Some people are just greedy.

Are you playing GW because it's a replica of real life?

I'm not talking about giving aways money for free.
There'd be no point labeling money "don't spend"

If I give money to some charity, I want to know where it's spend.
If I give an item to some GW charcter, I want to make sure, that the character was in need, not in greed.
